WILDE Thursdays & Fridays

Where Science and the Great Outdoors Meet
WILDE Thursdays & Fridays are Experiential Science enrichment programs for K-7 learners.

About WILDE Thursdays & Fridays
What are WILDE Thursdays & Fridays?
WILDE Thursdays and WILDE Fridays are part-time enrichment opportunities for children to immerse in nature and get inspired about topics in the B.C./Yukon Science Curriculum. The program has a secondary focus on Art, Language Arts, PE, and Core Competencies.
This is a one-day-a-week program separated into three semesters: fall, winter, and spring. Learning takes place in our outdoor "Natural Learning Campus" where these programs run year-round.
Our goal is to challenge students both academically and physically. Each week of the academic year is built around a science theme. E.g., Migration, Snow Science, Wetlands, The Night Sky etc. Teachers use experiential learning strategies to ensure that learning is hands-on and impactful. This results in greater knowledge retention and skill acquisition.
Why Outdoor Education?
Research shows that learning in nature improves attention, creativity, resilience, and mental health.
WILDE Thursdays & Fridays prepare students for secondary school and beyond. Whitehorse has numerous experiential science programs at the secondary level. Your child will be better prepared to excel in these programs after the WILDE experience.
K-7 is a crucial time for children to see themselves as a learner, get hooked on learning and deeply curious about the world around them.
WILDE Thursday & Friday educators are highly skilled, certified teachers, with a passion for learning.

FAQs about WILDE Thursdays & Fridays
The safety of participants and staff is important to us. Risk management is an active process for our team and participants alike. We are constantly assessing risk and identifying hazards. Once a hazard is identified, we consider the likelihood and consequences of that hazard and possible mitigation strategies. If we cannot mitigate the hazard to a reasonable likelihood or consequence, then we consider changing the activity or venue. Some hazards are so integral to outdoor and experiential learning in a forest that we must accept them. For example, we must accept the hazard presented by sticks, logs, trees, etc. when working in a forest. This involves the assumption of risk by families choosing our programs. We are always happy to discuss what we do and how we do it with families as we practice informed consent.
